Glen Helen, MX Round 1: Page 2
After a short twenty or twenty five minutes, at least for those watching, it was done and a record had been set. Kory Ellis went into the record books as the moto 1 winner after beating out Jones by only inches. It became apparent to everyone that there could still be a fight this season and everyone was still on the same playing field. Exhausted riders made way in search of rest and mechanics went back to work washing, repairing or replacing anything and everything that required attention before Moto 2.
By Moto 2 is was clear there would be a battle and everyone expected to win. Ellis carried on with a winner’s momentum and moved into an early lead. Later on in the race, after taking advantage of a mistake by Jones and the misfortune of Creech and Eichner, Gust was able to close in the gap between he and Ellis with Jones tailing the pair. Jones continued to follow waiting for a chance to make a ferocious pass and leave them both behind.
When the checkers fell, Gust had maintained the lead and was closely followed by Ellis and Jones. John Natalie Jr. followed in fourth place after blazing through the pack from dead last thanks to a bad start. Keith Little followed in fifth place making a 5/5 finish. History was set on February 8th, 2004 with Kory Ellis taking home the overall, followed by Doug Gust, Jeremiah Jones, John Natalie Jr. and Keith Little respectively. Look for the action to continue at Gatorback in the coming weeks. Several magazines, web sites and a television photographer were on hand to capture Glen Helen. This event probably set a record for the largest media attendance to ever visit an ATV National. To view more race action from Glen Helen please use the following link to visit the photo gallery.
