Step 3, Tools of the Trade: After your body is protected you’ll need a few mandatory parts for your machine before any track will let you race. First of all, you’ll need numbers. Take a day to think about your number and pick something that has a meaning. Avoid using a single digit number, trust me they’re all used up. Be original, don’t use your birth date or graduation date, those are all used up as well. After you’ve picked a number get the numbers and a number plate. This step should cost under twenty bucks and you must have it. Some races require a front and rear number plate or even numbers on your rear fenders. You might ask the shop were you’ll be purchasing your numbers if they know what is required in your area or district. Most races not sanctioned by a serious promoter do not require a tether switch but you should respect yourself and your competitors by picking one up. A tether switch kills your engine if you get ejected so your machine doesn’t try and make a pass for the lead without you. It works just like a key or the off button by your left thumb so it won’t damage your electronics. The most popular choice is Pro Design and it costs about $35. All you need to install it is wire strippers and electrical tape and you can probably do this by yourself in under an hour. Often the most overlooked part that should be mandatory at any track but isn’t; is nerfbars. They save your feet from becoming road kill when you slip off your pegs (and you will one day) as well as keeping your legs from becoming road kill from the crazy guy beside you. You can pick up a good set for under $150 and it is well worth the expense. Best of all, this is a 30 minute bolt-on part. Note: The average hospital bill for a broken leg is over a grand “use your head”. |
