Step 4, Final Prep:

You’ve got the cool gear and gadgets, now you need to make sure you won’t need to use you AAA card to get a tow off the track. If you’re lucky enough to be racing a new machine you can skip this section, but the rest of us need to read on.

Wash your machine off and allow it to dry completely. Then look for any type of fluid leaks – oil, grease, fuels or brake fluid. Any of these definitely need to be repaired. Pay special attention to your brakes, make sure the fluid level is at the specified mark and front and rear pads are good. The brakes will become your new best friend when all else fails. Also, make a quick check over all your nuts and bolts, especially the lug nuts. You always want to finish a race with the same number of wheels you started with; you’d be surprised how many people don’t.

Even if you don’t have the experience to fix any of the problems you may find it is very handy to have a shop manual so you will better understand the terms your mechanic or preferred shop throws out. You can purchase an OEM shop manual from your dealership for about $40 or you can get a Chilton manual from just about any ATV or Bike shop for around $20.

Remember, racing can be a great way to fill free time and to keep yourself out of trouble. It makes a great family sport but it is a serious situation so always use your head and ride smart. Intentional rubbing isn’t racing so don’t even go there. The number one plate doesn’t come from taking out the rest of the field. Always have fun and be cool.

See you at the races,
