Apparently the 20 plus quad width starting line wasn’t large enough for both Gust and Jones. When the starting lane narrowed going into the first turn they were side by sided and neither gave and inch. Jones was left plowing through the haybayls “ATV races don’t get the cool Tuff Blocks” and entered the first turn pointing in the wrong direction and in last place. Doug continued on unaffected and soon overtook the first place position. By the end of the moto Jeremiah worked his was all the way to third and was challenging Cain for second. Unfortunately on the final lap Cain was over reluctant to hand over second place to Jones and launched off the finish line jump wide open. It seemed as though Tavis may have been doing a testing session for his Elka suspension or maybe even going for an ATV high jump record. After a short fight with the hard packed soil Tavis was able to walk away with only minor injuries. After Jeremiah’s charge to the front the fans were left wondering what may happen in the second moto if Jones could manage a good start. Fortunately he did enter the first turn headed the right direction this time and with no hay jammed in his DG bumper, but well behind Team Suzuki’s Doug Gust. Kory Ellis charged from 14th spot to battle with John Natalie who was dealing with a harsh beating he took from a crash in practice on Friday. John ended up taking home 3rd overall and sent a message to the rest of the field that he would be one of the main contenders this season.
