R450: What do you think of what the ATVA has done for the sport?
Gary: I think that it is great. I used to like it when it was a dual series, because my heart was there. I think that the split hurt TT a little bit. I think what we are seeing now is that the sport is broken off and is supported more. It’s not just the amateur series of the ATVA.
R450: What could be changed that is going on now that would improve the sport?
Gary: It would be nice to get more outside sponsorship. As I have said, contingency money is key. I think one of the things is that ATV racing needs recognition by the AMA as a part of the motorcycle family. An example is that they have a motorcycle hall of fame. How is it that we spend funds and money, but we aren’t recognized in the hall of fame as ATV racers?
R450: I know that when you ran, it was a completely different series with different tracks, but what was your favorite track back then?
Gary: I had a couple that I really liked a lot. Both Red Bud and Mt. Morris were two that I really liked a lot. They were both awesome. They were both very technical tracks.
R450: What do you think of the track here at Glen Helen, and the changes they made for this year?
Gary: I think that Glen Helen does a great job. Unfortunately, they had quite a bit of wind here during the week, but they got the crews out here and cleaned it up and smoothed out the jumps. I think that they did a good job. I have been looking at the track and it is very nice. Unfortunately, we have had some rain here today, but we had a great day Saturday. I think all in all it has been good.
R450: How long have you been doing Denton Racing?
Gary: Denton Racing has been around for about twelve years. We just built a new superstore on the freeway in Riverside. We are getting so many walk in customers that we are hiring more employees. Up until that point, we weren’t that easy to find other than by advertising. Now because we have a freeway location we are easier to find and get many more people coming in to the store.
R450: How did you become involved with Weekend Warrior?
Gary: They sponsored me and asked me to work for them. I was about ready to quit racing so I thought that I would try it out, and it has been a great relationship.
Thanks for taking a few minutes of you time to talk with us Gary. We appreciate all that you do and have done for the sport, good luck with the future.
